Mise-en-scene.

  Lighting

Denotation: During the opening scene of the first episode of Stranger things there is flickering lighting. Firstly at in the opening scene where the man is running , when the kids leave Mike's house and then at Will's house with the lightbulb and when he's riding his bike home. The scene then switches to a yellow lamp lighting when the boys are playing DnD in in the basement. When Will's mum opened the dooer the room went dark 

Connotation:During the opening scene there is a flickering light. The man is running in th scene and the lighting is presented as quite dark- green and gloomey . The camera changes from being able to see from the mans perspective to whatever is following him perspective. When the man finally comes to the elevator he looks up and we look up with him, he is dragged upwards. And the camera cuts out for us to see that. All the while the lighting in the elevator is lit brightly and clear until he is pulled up: there is a flicker seen.

 Setting:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Denotation:In the opening scene the man running is in a lab coat. The scene switches to the kids sitting around a table playing DnD , then Mike goes upstairs to the kitchen. The boys then go home and the scene switches to them riding their bikes on the road. Then Will falls off his bike from seeing something that frightened him. He runs home and the setting is changed to Will's house in the basement playing dnd.                                                                                                                  

Connotation: The change of scenery may suggest that there will be a lot happening in the show and there will be a lot of different perspectives throughout.  This means that there are going to be many times throughout the show  that we see a change in scenery.                                                                                                                    

Costume:  

Denotation:The kids are all wearing long sleeved clothes and  skinny jeans.  When the kids leave they're all wearing thick coats.

Connotation:The reason the characters might be wearing warm clothes is because it was dark and looked really cold. So they're dressed according to the weather.
